Custom Window Treatments in McCordsville, Indiana

Quick Answer

Everything below reflects what we actually tell McCordsville customers in person, including the awkward parts. Light gaps exist. Batteries run down. Dye lots drift. Knowing that before you order is the whole point.

  • Services: faux wood blinds, wood blinds, vertical blinds, aluminum mini blinds
  • Service area: McCordsville, Hancock County, IN and surrounding areas
  • A restring, a new cord lock, a tilt mechanism or a dead motor battery gets handled far faster than a new order, because nothing has to be built. New custom work runs on the factory's two to five week clock.
  • Insured and bonded

Schedule Your Free In-Home Measure

The measure takes as long as the house needs. We take width and height at three points on every opening and use the smallest reading, check the diagonals for square, and record usable mounting depth opening by opening, because in McCordsville that number moves a long way between a 2021 Hampton Walk build and an 1890s house on Depot Street. Specialty shapes get handled separately, since the half round and elliptical transoms over the front windows in the 2000 to 2015 stock won't take a straight headrail.

I agree to be contacted by McCordsville Window Treatments regarding my inquiry.

McCordsville had 1,134 residents in 2000 and 13,094 on the 1 July 2025 estimate, and the housing follows that curve exactly. Of 4,228 units, 2,651 went up between 2000 and 2019 and another 563 since 2020, so two thirds of the town is production building on cleared Vernon Township ground, with windows set into drywall returns and no applied casing at all. That one detail decides the job. There's nothing outside the opening to land a bracket on, the return corner is soft, and usable mounting depth becomes the first measurement rather than the last. Then there are the 332 houses that predate 1940, all of them on the 1865 plat around Broadway, Main, Depot and McCord Street, where nothing repeats and every opening is its own number. Same town, two completely different jobs.

Solar shade openness is the spec most worth spending a minute on. A 1% fabric blocks the most and gives you the least view. A 3% is the common compromise. A 5% keeps a good view with meaningful glare reduction, and a 10% is mostly about knocking the edge off. Darker fabrics give better outward view and worse glare control. On a bright McCordsville west wall that trade-off is the whole decision.

Humidity here runs high from late May into late September, and that's the single biggest reason we specify composite instead of hardwood in bathrooms, laundries and kitchens. Hardwood is a natural material and it moves with moisture. In a McCordsville powder room it may look fine for a year and then start to show it at the joints. Composite doesn't have that problem, and it takes paint well.

Built in the Last Few Years?

Many of our McCordsville customers moved into a house built by one of these companies. Builder blinds are usually stock sizes trimmed to fit, so if yours came with the house and never ran right, that is why. We measure the openings as built rather than off the plan.

What Matters at the Window in McCordsville

What our crew has learned working in McCordsville homes.

About McCordsville Homes

McCordsville's median house dates to 2009. Build era shares on the parcel record run pre-1940 7.9%, 1940-1979 6.6%, 1980-1999 9.6%, 2000-2019 62.7%, 2020+ 13.3%. Median home value is $345,400. Two thirds of the stock is 2000 or newer, which in central Indiana production building means vinyl or vinyl clad windows set in drywall return openings with no applied casing at all. Inside mount depth is usually adequate but the return edge is fragile and there is nothing to screw a bracket into outside the jamb. two story production traditional; modern farmhouse; Craftsman influenced elevations with gable brackets and shake accents; brick and vinyl transitional; single story ranch and villa product in the newer age targeted sections; attached townhome Typical opening count: 18-28 openings for the dominant 2,200-3,200 sq ft two story production house, counting basement egress and the stair/foyer glass; 10-16 for the ranch and villa product; 12-20 for a house in the 1865 village plat once basement sash are.

Recent Weather Patterns

Central Indiana sits in IECC climate zone 5A, which means a real cooling load and a real heating load on the same window. NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for Indianapolis put the July average high at 85.2F, the January average high at 36.1F and the January average low at 20.9F, with the muggy season running May 25 to September 22. Almost none of consequence. Two thirds of the town's housing was built after 2000 on cleared Vernon Township farm ground, and 13.3% is 2020 or newer, so street trees in most subdivisions are fifteen years old at best and give no useful summer shading to a first floor window.

What Our Crew Sees in McCordsville

Two story foyer glass and half round or elliptical transoms over front facing windows are common in the 2000-2015 stock. Post-2018 product tends to swap the arch for a stacked rectangular transom and a wider fixed unit. Bay and box windows appear in the 1990s sections. Active new construction includes Hampton Walk, The Townes at Hampton Walk, McCord Square (apartments delivered, townhouses and roughly 500-600 single family homes planned).

What We Are Running in McCordsville Right Now

Both offers apply to work quoted and ordered while they are posted here. Ask about them at the in-home measure and we will put the discount on the written quote before you decide anything.

Offer 1

$500 Off Your First Exterior Screen, Plus a Free Motorization Upgrade

Take $500 off your first exterior screen and we will add the motorization upgrade at no charge. Exterior screens stop solar heat outside the glass, which is the only place you can stop it before it is already in the room, and a motor is the difference between using one and forgetting it.

Applies to a first exterior screen. Ask at the measure so the discount is on the written quote before you order. Motorized product runs on batteries that need replacing, about a year on Hunter Douglas PowerView.

Offer 2

Free Motorization Upgrade on Select Interior Shades

Pick from the qualifying interior shade lines and the motorization upgrade is free. It is worth most on the openings you would otherwise leave alone: tall great room glass, anything above a stair, and the west windows nobody remembers to close by four.

Select interior shade lines only. We will tell you at the measure which of your openings qualify. Batteries are a real running cost and are not included.

Payment Options That Work for You

A window covering project is worth doing right the first time. Financing options through McCordsville Window Treatments lender partners help you pay over time instead of cutting scope or delaying the work.

Start the work now and begin paying later. On a whole-house order this is how people phase a large job without phasing the install.

  • Payments deferred for a promotional period
  • Rate and period set by the lender
  • Quoted price held for the order
Equal Payment Plans

Divide the project cost into equal monthly payments across a fixed promotional period, so the budget is predictable from day one.

Window Treatment Services for McCordsville Homes

From one room to a whole house, McCordsville Window Treatments measures every opening, orders it custom, and installs it with the same crew that took the measurements.

Faux Wood Blinds in McCordsville

Motorizing faux wood is possible and usually unnecessary. Heavy slats make a motor work harder, and battery life on motorized product is roughly a year by Hunter Douglas's own PowerView figure. On a reachable McCordsville window, a wand costs nothing to own and doesn't need charging.

Learn more

Wood Blinds in McCordsville

McCordsville Window Treatments is insured and bonded, and every residential job over $150 in Indiana falls under the Home Improvement Contract Act at IC 24-5-11, which requires a written contract with a real scope and a total price. Your McCordsville order gets one before anything's fabricated.

Learn more

Vertical Blinds in McCordsville

A wand-operated vertical takes the loop out of the room, which matters where children play near a McCordsville patio door. Products we hang conform to ANSI/WCMA A100.1-2022, and inner-cord non-compliance isn't a small thing: it's a substantial product hazard under 16 CFR 1120.3.

Learn more

Aluminum Mini Blinds in McCordsville

This is the least expensive custom product we'll hang. Nationally, stock shades run about $60 to $600 per window while custom treatments start around $250, and an aluminum mini blind built to your McCordsville opening sits near the bottom of that custom band.

Learn more

Roller Shades in McCordsville

A motorized roller is the easiest automation in the house, and the batteries are the part nobody's quoting. Hunter Douglas states about a year on PowerView. Multiply that across a McCordsville great room and decide now whether hardwired power is worth planning around.

Learn more

Solar Shades in McCordsville

Two to five weeks is the normal build. Screen fabrics come from dye lots like anything else, and charcoal in particular varies. Adding one shade to a McCordsville bank of windows a year later shows up in raking afternoon light, which is exactly when you're using them.

Learn more

Cellular Shades in McCordsville

McCordsville Window Treatments is insured and bonded and puts every McCordsville job on paper. Indiana's Home Improvement Contract Act at IC 24-5-11 requires a written contract over $150, and yours names the cell count and the fabric beside the price. That protects you more than it protects us.

Learn more

Zebra Shades in McCordsville

Two to five weeks from approval. Because the sheer and solid bands get dyed together, a lot change moves both, and a replacement shade for one McCordsville window a year later won't read as a match beside its neighbor even under the same name.

Learn more

Roman Shades in McCordsville

Finished length has to account for the stack and for how the fabric hangs after a week. We measure the McCordsville opening three ways and then decide the mount height, because the same shade at the same size doesn't look the same inside the frame as it does above it.

Learn more

Woven Wood Shades in McCordsville

Natural fiber takes on moisture, and central Indiana stays muggy from late May into late September. A woven wood in a McCordsville sunroom expands slightly through the summer and settles back in winter. Sized correctly it doesn't bind, which is why we size for the movement.

Learn more

Blackout Shades in McCordsville

Blackout fabric costs more than light filtering in the same line, and channels or a light-blocking pocket add real money on top. On a McCordsville bedroom it's usually the mount that costs more, not the fabric. Custom treatments nationally run about $250 to $2,600 per window.

Learn more

Plantation Shutters in McCordsville

If you want the window to disappear, don't buy shutters. They're furniture and they're meant to be seen. A McCordsville room where the goal is uninterrupted glass and a soft view wants a roller or a solar shade, and we'd rather point you there.

Learn more

Cafe Shutters in McCordsville

Short panels and real hinges, with a tilt that has to work one-handed while you're standing at a sink. Because the panels are small, the hardware carries proportionally more of the look, and a hidden tilt inside the stile is worth the upgrade on a McCordsville bath.

Learn more

Motorized Shades in McCordsville

Motors go in at the factory, not in your living room, so the order can't be edited on install day. Custom lead time runs two to five weeks, and a McCordsville job that changes fabric after the order releases starts that clock over.

Learn more

Custom Drapery in McCordsville

Layering solves the problem one treatment can't. A sheer or a solar shade handles daytime glare while the McCordsville street keeps its distance, and the drapery panels stay decorative until dark, when they close and do the privacy work. Two products, two jobs.

Learn more

Valances & Top Treatments in McCordsville

Board-mounted and rod-mounted valances don't behave alike. A board gives you a hard flat top and a defined return, while a rod-pocket valance gathers and moves, so a McCordsville window that needs a crisp architectural line gets the board and a softer room can take the rod.

Learn more

Exterior Solar Shades in McCordsville

There are two very different jobs here. Enclosing a McCordsville porch bay means a large shade on tracks that lives outdoors permanently, while shading a single west window means a narrow unit that mostly stays retracted. The hardware and the price aren't comparable.

Learn more

Retractable Awnings in McCordsville

The lateral arms are spring-loaded and they hold the fabric under tension, which is what keeps a McCordsville awning flat instead of flapping. That tension also means the arms are the part to keep clean and unobstructed, since anything binding a joint puts the load somewhere it doesn't belong.

Learn more

Commercial Window Treatments in McCordsville

Volume pricing is real, and it isn't a percentage off a residential number. A repeated spec across many identical openings fabricates efficiently, and a McCordsville project with four window sizes prices very differently from one with forty. Standardizing the spec early is where the savings actually live.

Learn more

Skylight Shades in McCordsville

Cost on overhead work climbs for reasons that have nothing to do with fabric. The motor, the tensioned track, a shape that isn't rectangular and the access needed to install it all add up, so a McCordsville skylight quote sits well above a wall window of the same square area.

Learn more

Sliding Glass Door Blinds in McCordsville

Cleaning a door treatment means dealing with hands and noses. Vinyl vanes on a McCordsville slider wipe down, fabric vanes need a brush and patience, and a woven or textured panel is the hardest of the three to bring back once a dog's leaned on it.

Learn more

Panel Track Blinds in McCordsville

The track and carriers are what wear out, and it isn't the fabric. On a McCordsville opening operated several times a day, the glide quality you feel at install is the thing to judge, because a cheap carrier gets sticky long before a panel looks tired.

Learn more

Sheer Shades in McCordsville

These are made to order, so two to five weeks is the expectation and none of that's negotiable. A McCordsville order also needs the vane size and the mount type locked before release, since both are built into the shade rather than adjusted afterward.

Learn more

Pleated Shades in McCordsville

Standard pleated shades are lifted by cords passing through the fabric, and those holes let pinpoints of light through when the shade is down. In a bright McCordsville bedroom you'll see them at sunrise, which is why a cordless design or a cellular alternative gets recommended there.

Learn more

Bamboo Shades in McCordsville

The edge binding is worth a conversation, and it's usually skipped. A bound edge in cloth tape gives a woven shade a finished line and keeps the weave from fraying, and on a McCordsville window with painted casing that binding is what makes the shade look made rather than cut.

Learn more

Dual Shades in McCordsville

After dark the arithmetic flips. Lights on inside a McCordsville room and the sheer bands read as translucent from outside even when they're offset, so a window that faces a sidewalk wants the blackout tier of this fabric or a second layer behind it.

Learn more

Top-Down Bottom-Up Shades in McCordsville

Cordless top-down bottom-up removes every loop from the window, which is the right specification in a McCordsville house with small kids. Inner-cord non-compliance is a substantial product hazard under 16 CFR 1120.3, and this configuration didn't always come cordless.

Learn more

Cordless Blinds in McCordsville

A cordless blind is a mechanism, and mechanisms have a cycle count behind them. Raised and lowered twice a day, a McCordsville family room blind sees a few thousand cycles before anything feels different, and that's why slat material and headrail quality matter more here than the pretty part of the catalog.

Learn more

Hardwood Shutters in McCordsville

Install is fitting work, and it isn't carpentry. Frames go in first and get shimmed plumb, then panels hang and get checked for an even reveal down the meeting stiles. A McCordsville whole-house set takes longer than blinds because every panel is adjusted individually, and rushing that always shows.

Learn more

Composite Shutters in McCordsville

Depth is the first thing we'll check. A shutter frame needs real mounting depth behind the trim for an inside mount, and where a McCordsville opening comes up short, the answer is a build-out frame carrying the panel forward. It works well and it changes the profile, so you should see it first.

Learn more

Smart Home Shade Integration in McCordsville

A hardwired system avoids batteries entirely, and it's the right call during construction or a full remodel when the walls are open. Retrofitting power into a finished McCordsville house is a different project, so most existing homes end up on rechargeable batteries with a charging plan.

Learn more

Blind Repair & Restring in McCordsville

There's a point where repair stops making sense. If the slats are cupped, the valance is broken and the rail is bent on the same McCordsville blind, you're rebuilding around a treatment that's already worn out. We'd rather price the replacement honestly than take three small fees.

Learn more

Shutter Repair in McCordsville

Magnets and catches are the cheapest fix on the list. When panels won't stay shut, it's usually a catch that's lost its grip or shifted out of alignment rather than a warped panel. On a McCordsville service call that's often ten minutes and a couple of small parts.

Learn more

Motorization Retrofit in McCordsville

Travel limits have to be set at the shade, and they aren't guesswork. The motor learns a top stop and a bottom stop, and getting the bottom right on an out-of-square McCordsville opening takes a few passes so the hembar sits parallel to the sill rather than to the headrail.

Learn more

Outdoor Patio Shades in McCordsville

Restaurants and clubs run these hard. A McCordsville patio operating seven days needs commercial-grade drives, a control scheme staff can use when they haven't read a manual, and a maintenance schedule, because a shade cycled twice a day sees more use in one season than a home shade sees in five years.

Learn more

Office Window Treatments in McCordsville

Commercial work isn't covered by the Indiana Home Improvement Contract Act, which applies to residential jobs. A McCordsville office project runs on a purchase order or a contract with a written scope instead, and since Indiana licenses nobody in this trade, our insurance and bonding are what stand behind it.

Learn more

Healthcare Window Treatments in McCordsville

Energy performance is a product attribute and should be cited that way. DOE and ORNL testing found cellular shades saved up to 20 percent heating energy against a bare window, which is relevant on a McCordsville facility with a large perimeter and rooms people can't simply leave.

Learn more

Multifamily Window Treatments in McCordsville

Submittals still apply on new construction. A McCordsville general contractor should expect product data, fabric samples, bracket details and flame propagation test documentation where the occupancy requires it, reviewed and approved before fabrication rather than assembled after the first delivery's already on site.

About Us

Local Expertise, Real Results

In a town where 62.7 percent of the houses were built between 2000 and 2019, the openings are square and the mounting depth is the variable. We measure the depth of the drywall return before anyone opens a fabric book, because that number decides inside mount against outside mount and the fabric never does.

Based in central Indiana and serving McCordsville and Hancock County, McCordsville Window Treatments sells and installs custom blinds, shades, interior shutters, drapery and motorized window treatments. We work by appointment at your house because the windows are there and the decisions can't honestly be made anywhere else. Mounting depth, square and obstruction are things you confirm at the opening or you guess at.

We work McCordsville the way its build record actually reads. The ACS puts 1,223 units in the 2000s and 1,428 in the 2010s, which means whole streets in Villages at Brookside and Deer Crossing carry the same elevation and the same window schedule. Measure one plan carefully and you've effectively measured twenty houses. That cuts both ways, because a mistake repeats just as fast, so we still run a three point measure on every opening instead of copying a number across a street. At the other end of town, the 1865 plat holds effectively all 332 of McCordsville's pre-1940 houses, with wood jambs, narrow wood casing and storm window build ups that quietly eat the depth. One block there can hold an 1890s frame house next to a 1960s ranch next to a 2015 infill build.

McCordsville is 84.7 percent owner occupied, median household income is $110,692, and 57.8 percent of adults hold a bachelor's degree or higher, so the questions we get here are technical ones. People ask about openness factor before they ask about color. They want to know what stack height does to the top of a two story foyer window, and whether motorizing a 22 opening house means changing batteries on all of it once a year. Hunter Douglas puts PowerView battery life at about one year, and we'd rather say that at the measure than let you discover it in a stairwell. Custom fabrication runs 2 to 5 weeks after the order goes in. Nothing in this trade needs to happen overnight, and we won't pretend otherwise to move an order along.

Our Promise

We'll run a three point measure and a square check on every opening, write down the mounting depth we found, and tell you where an inside mount will leave a light gap before you spend anything. Indiana requires a written contract on residential work over $150 under IC 24-5-11, and yours carries the scope and the total price rather than a range. We're insured and insured.

Why McCordsville Chooses Us

Why McCordsville Homes Need Their Own Numbers

Serving McCordsville and Hancock County with quality materials, thorough inspections, and transparent pricing.

We measure the return, not the catalog

Two thirds of McCordsville is 2000 or newer, which in central Indiana production building means the drywall wraps into the opening and stops. There's no applied casing to take an outside mount bracket, and the return corner crumbles if you crowd it. In Hampton Walk, where Fischer Homes is currently selling plans from 1,247 to 4,204 square feet, we put a tape on the actual depth at every opening before we quote, because a shallow return changes the headrail and not just the price.

West water glass gets its own product

The rear elevations on W Nautica Blvd, Bayfront Shores, Anchormark Dr and Schooner Cir were built to look north west across Geist Reservoir, and that's the hardest light in Hancock County: low and late, with reflection off the water doubling it at exactly the hours people sit in the room. A solar shade at 3 percent openness holds most of the view and knocks the glare down. A 10 percent keeps more view and gives back more glare. We show you both on your own glass before you choose.

The old plat gets measured twice

McCordsville records 332 housing units built before 1940 and they sit in one place, the 1865 plat on Broadway, Main, Depot and McCord Street. A hundred and sixty years of settling on Hancock County clay means no two openings agree. We take width and height at three points, use the smallest reading, and note the storm window build up where it steals inside mount depth. There's no HOA and no historic district on those blocks, so nothing limits your choice except the opening itself.

You hear about the light gap first

Every inside mount leaves a gap at the edge. Lutron publishes 3/4 inch per side on its Roller 20/64 and a standard factory deduction of 1/16 inch per side, and anything over 120 inches tall or past a 4:1 height to width ratio gets a wider gap than that. It matters in the two story foyer glass the 2000 to 2015 McCordsville stock is full of. If a bedroom in Villages at Brookside has to go genuinely dark, that means a side channel or an outside mount, and we say so before the order.

Our Process

Step by Step Through a McCordsville Order

Four steps and nothing hidden in the middle of them. Custom fabrication runs 2 to 5 weeks after you approve the order, which is the honest number for this trade and the reason nothing here gets sold as urgent. Indiana's Home Improvement Contract Act, IC 24-5-11, requires a written contract on residential work over $150, so the scope and the total price are on paper with the dates before anything is cut. We're insured and insured. Indiana issues no state credential for window treatments, so be careful of anyone in Hancock County who claims one.

Measure in your openings

We come to the house with a tape and a level. Three points on width and height, smallest reading wins, diagonals checked for square, and a recorded mounting depth for every opening. In a Villages at Brookside two story that's 18 to 26 openings. On the 1865 plat it's 12 to 20 and none of them match. You keep the written numbers whether or not you order anything from us.

Product and written quote

Then we sit down with what the measure found. Openness factor, roll direction, light filtering against blackout, and whether the half round transom in your 2000s foyer takes a fixed panel or stays bare. Every price we show you is the national range for that product family. No Indianapolis installed pricing is published anywhere, so a local average quoted at you as fact was invented by whoever said it.

Order and fabrication

The order goes out with finished width and finished height, the factory deduction applied, and the dye lot recorded. That last one matters. If you add two openings in Deer Crossing next spring, a fresh run of the same fabric can read slightly different in the same room, and we'd rather tell you that before you order than after it hangs. Lead time is 2 to 5 weeks.

Install and adjust

We hang it, level it, set travel limits and pair anything motorized, then run every unit through full travel while we're still standing in the room. Brackets go into wood framing or into the jamb, never into the bare drywall return corner that two thirds of McCordsville was built with. Packaging leaves with us. If a light gap reads worse in your room than it did on paper, that's a conversation we want on install day.

Common Causes

What we see most often on McCordsville window treatments

McCordsville homeowners typically call us about these scenarios.

Fading On One Side Of A Bay

The west-facing panel of a bay in a McCordsville house has aged faster than its neighbors and now the three shades no longer match. Sun exposure is cumulative and uneven, so this is normal rather than defective. Ordering a spare panel with the original job is the cheap safeguard nobody thinks of.

A Baby Arriving In Three Months

Parents want the nursery dark and they want the cords gone. Both are solvable and neither is automatic. ANSI/WCMA A100.1-2022 pushed the market toward cordless and inaccessible-cord designs, and genuine darkness in a McCordsville bedroom needs edge management rather than just a blackout fabric on an inside mount. We would rather have that conversation before the nursery gets painted.

Sun Damage On The South Side

A hardwood floor with a pale patch where the rug sits, a leather sofa going lighter on one arm, a piano the owner is worried about. Ultraviolet is only 40 to 60 percent of the cause so nothing hanging in the opening prevents it, but a solar shade or a lined drapery slows it noticeably on the openings that matter.

Storefront Glare On The Square

A shop or an office facing the afternoon sun on the McCordsville square, with merchandise fading in the display and staff squinting at screens. Commercial fabrics with a flame rating and hardware that survives constant use are a different specification from a living room, and getting a residential product sold into that space means replacing it far too soon.

An Awning That Has Given Up

The frame is straight but the fabric is faded, stretched and torn at one edge after years of central Indiana weather. Recovering it on the existing structure is usually far cheaper than starting again, and a lot of people do not know that is an option until somebody tells them.

Vertical Vanes Snapping Off The Slider

The patio door treatment has lost three vanes, the carrier stems are broken and the whole thing clacks every time the door opens. On a door used daily, that's a product reaching the end of its life. Vertical cellular or panel track glides are the usual upgrades and both stack clear of the handle.

How We Work

Five Stages, In This Order

Custom window treatments are made to your openings, so the order matters more than it does in most trades. This is how every McCordsville job runs.

1

Free In-Home Measure

Every opening gets three widths, three heights and a diagonal square check, because houses settle and an opening that is out of square is the difference between a shade that runs true and one that binds. Mounting depth gets read at the jamb. It all goes on paper before any product conversation starts.

2

Product and Fabric, In Your Own Light

Samples get looked at in the room they are going in, not under showroom lighting. This is where openness factor, inside versus outside mount, roll direction and material get decided, and where we tell you the light gap you are going to live with.

3

Written Scope and Contract

Opening by opening, with the mount type, the light gap, the operation and the total price in writing. Indiana requires a written contract on residential work over $150 under IC 24-5-11, and we would write one anyway.

4

Custom Fabrication

Your sizes go to the workroom. Two to five weeks is typical depending on product and finish, longer on specialty shapes and motorized configurations. You get the real date at the measure rather than a range.

Common Questions

Questions About Working in Older McCordsville Houses

Straight answers to the questions McCordsville homeowners ask most.

Usually. The measuring here is the easiest in town, because Hampton Walk is under construction now and those openings are factory square. The constraint is depth. Current production building in McCordsville sets the window into a drywall return with no applied casing, so usable depth is whatever the return gives you and there's nothing outside the opening to take a bracket. Some headrails and cassettes want a full inch and a half of flat depth before they clear. We measure the actual return at each opening, and where it's short we move to a low profile headrail or an outside mount fixed into wood framing. One more thing about a new house: framing moves through its first two heating seasons, so a number taken at closing may not read the same next winter.
Start by counting openings, because that's the number that drives everything. The dominant McCordsville house is a 2,200 to 3,200 square foot two story running 18 to 28 openings once you count the basement and the stair glass. The national custom range is $250 to $2,600 per window, so the honest bracket on that house starts near $4,500 and can pass $70,000, and where you land inside it is almost entirely product. Standard stock shades run $60 to $600 nationally, which is a different conversation and a different fit. On a 10 to 16 opening villa the same arithmetic starts near $2,500. Those are national ranges. Nobody publishes installed pricing for Indianapolis, and plenty of McCordsville jobs get phased, with the west facing rooms and the bedrooms done first.
That exposure is the hardest light in the county. The Bay Creek at Geist and Bay Creek East lots were laid out so the rear elevation looks north west across Geist Reservoir, which means low late sun arriving with a second helping bounced off the surface, at the hours you're actually in the room. A solar shade is the honest answer, and openness factor is the whole decision: 1 percent gives you the most control and the least view, 3 percent is where most water facing rooms end up, and 10 percent keeps the view and hands back much of the glare. NFRC attributes 40 to 60 percent of fading damage to UV, so this slows fading on floors and furniture. It doesn't prevent it, and no product does.
Almost nothing will, and that isn't a problem, it's just a longer measure. Original McCordsville (the 1865 town plat) holds effectively all 332 of the town's pre-1940 housing units, and a hundred and sixty years of settling on Hancock County clay means every opening is its own number. We take width and height at three points, use the smallest, and check the diagonals. Two things catch people here. Storm window build ups eat inside mount depth and are easy to miss on a fast measure, and a single block on Broadway or Main can hold three separate window vintages, so a whole house quote can't be built from one repeated size. The upside is real: no HOA, no historic district, nothing limiting your choice but the opening.
Close, but say the words dye lot out loud before you order. Fabric is dyed in runs, and a new run of the same product can read slightly different in the same daylight, which shows up worst on a stair landing where old and new hang in view of one another. We record the lot number at the original order for exactly this reason. Brookside also built in phases, carrying at least nine internal street names from Brookside Boulevard through Cedar Chase, Tanglewood, Clearwater and Overlook, so sections differ in age and sometimes in window size inside one community. If the run has moved, your options are ordering the whole floor together, accepting a small variance, or putting the new fabric where it never shares a sightline with the old.
We can't tell you it does or it doesn't, and you should be wary of anyone who says otherwise. Gateway Crossing runs a real association with an architectural documents library administered through Planned Development Services, which is the normal signature of a formal approval process, but the covenant text itself isn't publicly retrievable, so no recorded rule on street facing color or reflective coverings could be verified either way. Treat it as unknown rather than absent. Pull your own recorded covenants before you order, because what associations most often regulate is what the street sees, which is the liner color and not the fabric you look at from inside. Most interior products offer a white or off white backing that satisfies a uniformity clause without changing your room.
The half round or elliptical transom over a front facing window is the signature of McCordsville's 2000 to 2015 stock, and it's the shape people most often get wrong. An arch takes a fixed sunburst or a fixed shutter panel that doesn't operate, or it stays bare while the rectangle below it gets covered. Post-2018 product around town swapped the arch for a stacked rectangular transom, which is easier, because that one takes its own small shade. Then plan the stack height on the two story glass below it. A raised shade still occupies several inches at the head, and on a foyer window that eats the top of the glass you paid for. Motorizing the upper unit usually beats an extension pole nobody keeps using.
Batteries, and it's the most under disclosed number in this trade. Hunter Douglas states PowerView battery life is about one year, so a fully motorized McCordsville two story turns into a recurring annual chore across every unit you automated. Our advice is to motorize what you genuinely can't reach: the two story foyer glass and the stair window, plus whatever sits high above a rear deck. Leave the bedrooms on a cordless lift. Motorized runs $300 to $1,500 per window installed as a national range, and that's before batteries. Hardwiring is an electrician's work and isn't in our quote. If you want whole house scenes, the hub or bridge is third party hardware, and pairing to the manufacturer's own remote is what we include.
More than you'd expect. McCord Square delivered 205 apartments across The Jackson and The Lucas, which puts a rental market inside a town that's 84.7 percent owner occupied, so this question comes up here and almost nowhere else in McCordsville. Apartment product of this type runs 4 to 9 openings per unit on drywall returns with shallow depth. Tension fit and no drill bracket options exist for cellular and roller shades in standard widths, and a pressure mounted rod handles a balcony door. Check the lease first, since single ownership means one set of rules for the whole building. If you're allowed a few screws, the openings are new and square, so a custom order will fit and will come down cleanly when you move.
No, and the gap is bigger than people expect. Villa product is predominantly single story, so the window schedule loses the stair window, the upper hall openings and the two story foyer glass in one move. Count on 10 to 16 openings instead of the 18 to 28 a McCordsville two story carries. What villas usually add is a wide fixed transom over the rear sliding glass door, which needs either its own treatment or a deliberate decision to leave it bare. One local wrinkle: a Timberstone name appears in both the McCordsville and the Fortville subdivision indexes, so we confirm the town from the address before quoting. A maintenance providing association also tends to reach further into exterior appearance than a standard detached HOA does.
For the product, no. For finding your house and for judging what a neighbor paid, yes. Geist Reservoir is legally in Marion, Hamilton and Hancock counties, but the bulk of the water and the best known Geist subdivisions sit in Fishers and Indianapolis. McCordsville's frontage is the Hancock County side: same water, Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation, a different tax rate. There's a genuine name collision too. Geist Woods Drive is a Lawrence street in Marion County, while Geist Woods Estates is a McCordsville plat in Hancock County. Same words, different county. We confirm the tax district from the address before we book the measure, because a price quoted on a Fishers street isn't a comparable and the drive matters for a service call later.
It is, and it's why the east side of McCordsville doesn't get the same answer as the middle of it. Around Stone Grove, Golden Grove and the Ricks Drive streets, lots sit on the section grid and back onto open agricultural ground, so there's no house behind you and no tree line to interrupt a long low angle exposure. Rear elevations catch it on summer afternoons and again on low winter mornings. That usually calls for two layers rather than one: a solar shade at 3 or 5 percent openness for the glare hours, with a cellular behind it for January, where the central Indiana average low is 20.9F. A single room darkening panel does one of those jobs and surrenders the view all day.
Often true. The ACS records 342 McCordsville units built between 1990 and 1999, and twenty five to thirty five years is long enough for a drywall return opening to move even where it started square. Bay and box windows are the ones that expose it, because you're measuring three or five separate openings that have to look like one finished treatment. We three point each section, take the smallest, and then decide whether the treatment sits inside the individual openings or spans the whole box on an outside mount. Out of square shows up as an uneven light gap along the bottom rail, and it's far cheaper to design around at the measure than to explain at the install.
At least two, and the address book hides it. The county subdivision index records Deer Crossing and Springs at Deer Crossing separately, which almost always means an original plat plus a later phase, so there are two window vintages under one name. Residents don't help, because nobody uses the plat name: they navigate by Fawn Meadow, White Tail, Black Tail and Deer Hill. We establish which section a house sits in before quoting, since the older phase has had longer to settle and the newer one may carry a different window size behind an identical looking front. Practically, it means we won't reuse a measure taken at a neighbor's house even when the elevations look like twins.
Go cordless, and get it written on the order. ANSI/WCMA A100.1 in its 2022 revision is the governing product safety standard, and it's the product that conforms to it, never the installer. There is no such thing as a certified company in this trade, and inner cord non compliance is treated as a substantial product hazard under 16 CFR 1120.3. In practice that means a cordless lift on anything in a child's room or playroom, and a wand tilt rather than a cord on blinds. If you want top down bottom up for privacy on a Mt. Vernon bus stop street, that's available cordless as well. Older houses on the 1865 plat sometimes still carry a corded product on a low opening, and that's the first thing worth changing.
No. McCordsville runs its own Architectural Review Committee alongside its Plan Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals and has adopted overlay ordinances, which is unusual for a town of 13,094 people, but that's design review of buildings rather than a rule about a homeowner's interior window coverings. There's no National Register listing and no local historic district anywhere in town either, so nothing public restricts your choice. What can restrict it is a private covenant, and here's the honest gap: for Highland Springs, Emerald Springs, Deer Crossing and Geist Woods Estates, no association document was retrievable, so treat any window covering rule as unknown rather than absent and pull your own recorded covenants before ordering.
Indiana Climate

Indiana Weather Affects Window Treatments Year Round

Indiana sees some of the most varied weather in the country. McCordsville homeowners live in IECC climate zone 5A, which carries a real cooling load in summer and a real heating load in winter. July averages a high near 85F, January averages a high near 36F with lows near 21F, and the muggy season runs from late May into late September. That is why the same window can be the hottest room in the house in July and the coldest in January.

Winter runs on the same shade

January in central Indiana averages a 36.1F high and a 20.9F low, and the 563 McCordsville houses built since 2020 carry large fixed units and sliding glass door walls that give heat back all night. DOE and Oak Ridge testing recorded cellular shades saving up to 20 percent of heating energy and up to 15 percent of total heating and cooling against a bare window. That's a product result rather than a dollar promise, and no federal energy label covers shades or blinds at all.

Muggy season moves hardwood

The muggy stretch runs 25 May to 22 September, and hardwood moves with it. Over a kitchen sink, in a bath, or on a Geist side rear opening where the door wall gets left open, hardwood louvers cup and hardwood slats twist. Composite shutters and faux wood blinds don't. In a 2,200 to 3,200 square foot McCordsville two story we'll normally put hardwood in the dry front rooms and composite anywhere water reaches, and say which is which on the quote.

Late sun off the reservoir

Geist Reservoir is legally in Marion, Hamilton and Hancock counties, and McCordsville's frontage is the Hancock County side. On the nautical named streets in the north west corner, rear elevations were designed for the view, so late sun arrives low and doubled by reflection. NFRC attributes 40 to 60 percent of fading damage to UV, so a solar shade at 1 or 3 percent openness slows fading on floors and furniture. It doesn't prevent it. Anyone who tells you a shade stops fade is selling.

Farm edge lots have no shade

Around Stone Grove, Golden Grove, Alexander Ridge and the Ricks Drive streets on the east side, lots sit on the section grid and back onto open agricultural ground. Nothing is built on the far side and there's no tree line to interrupt a long low angle exposure, summer afternoon or winter morning. Those rear elevations usually want two layers: a solar shade for the glare hours with a cellular behind it for the 20.9F nights. One product rarely covers both jobs on that exposure.

Choosing the Right Treatment for McCordsville Rooms

An honest breakdown of the three we specify most often, and when each one is the right answer.

Cellular Shades

The one product in this trade with measured energy numbers behind it. Trapped air in the cells does the work, and DOE and ORNL testing found cellular shades saved up to 20 percent on heating energy and up to 15 percent on total heating and cooling against a bare window. In a McCordsville house that matters in January and again in July, which is unusual for one product. Single cell suits most rooms, double cell where the glass is large or the room runs cold. Top-down bottom-up gets you daylight and privacy at the same time.

Both seasonsInsulating$$
Solar & Roller Shades

What you reach for when the complaint is afternoon sun. Solar fabrics come in stated openness factors, and that number is the whole decision: a lower openness cuts more glare and more of the view, a higher one keeps the view and cuts less. On a west or south McCordsville window this is usually the honest answer rather than blackout, because blackout kills the room. Cassette or fascia hides the roll, and roll direction gets decided at the measure so the fabric does not foul a crank or a lock.

Glare controlKeeps the view$$$
Plantation Shutters

The one that stays with the house. Shutters are a finish rather than a covering, and they do not get replaced every few years. In McCordsville the material choice is technical rather than a matter of taste: composite and poly in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms and sunrooms, because a four month humid season followed by a dry heated winter will move real hardwood, and hardwood only where the room stays conditioned. Louver size, frame style and divider rail get decided standing at your window.

Light Control

See What Each Fabric Does To The Light

Pick a fabric below and the window updates. It's a drawing rather than a photograph, so read it as a rough guide to what each family does in a McCordsville room, and to what it doesn't do.

Fabric type

Sheer, 10 percent openness

Ten percent of the weave is open, so you keep the view and most of the daylight. Glare drops a little. After dark, once your lamps are on, someone outside can read shapes through it, which is why this belongs on a view window rather than a bedroom.

Openness factor is printed on the fabric card, so you can compare one line against another before you order anything.

Keeps the viewNot private after dark

Solar, 5 percent openness

The usual pick for a west window or a covered porch. You can still read the yard through it, glare comes down noticeably, and the fabric intercepts a good share of the sun before it reaches you at four in the afternoon.

It also cuts the UV landing on floors and furniture. NFRC puts UV at roughly 40 to 60 percent of fading damage, so this slows fading rather than stopping it.

View and glare controlSlows fading

Solar, 3 percent openness

A tighter weave. The room goes dimmer and the view drops back to an outline. Choose it where the sun is the problem and the view is second, which around here usually means a west wall in July. That's a common call on this side of Indianapolis.

Openness affects how much you see out, not how private you are. A 3 percent fabric still shows silhouettes at night.

View becomes an outlineStrong glare control

Solar, 1 percent openness

Close to a solid fabric with a little view left in it. This is the strongest glare control in the solar family.

The trade is that it darkens the room on a gray January day too. Indianapolis averages a January high near 36F and the light is flat, so think about how the room reads in both seasons before you commit.

Darkest solar optionDim on gray days

Light filtering

No view through it. Daylight comes through the face diffused, so the room stays bright without a hot spot across the television or the kitchen island. This is the default for living spaces.

It isn't private in reverse at night. With the lamps on and the sun down, silhouettes still show.

No view through itBright without the glare

Room darkening

A denser fabric, usually with a liner behind it. Most of the light coming through the face is gone.

Light still arrives around the edges on an inside mount, so a room darkening shade gives you a dim room rather than a dark one. If someone in the house sleeps during the day, say so at the measure and we'll scope it differently.

Dim, not darkEdges stay bright

Blackout

The fabric itself passes essentially no light. What you'll still see is the perimeter. Lutron publishes an inside-mount light gap of about 3/4 inch per side on its Roller 20 and 64 shades, along with a standard factory deduction of 1/16 inch per side, and shades over 120 inches tall or past a 4:1 height-to-width ratio get larger gaps than that.

So if you need a genuinely dark bedroom, that gap has to be dealt with on purpose, either with side channels or by going outside mount. We tell you which one your opening can carry while we're still standing in the room.

Dark facePerimeter needs a plan

Openness factor is a measured fabric spec, so you can compare it line to line. The category names are not measured. One maker's room darkening can behave like another maker's light filtering, which is why the sample books come to the measure and get opened in the room they're going in, at the hour that room has the problem.

Which Parts of McCordsville We Reach

Window Treatment projects completed across McCordsville's neighborhoods and surrounding areas. Click any neighborhood for the specifics we have learned working there.

Original McCordsville is the 1865 town plat, and it holds effectively all 332 of the town's pre-1940 houses. The ACS puts those at 7.9 percent of McCordsville's 4,228 housing units, which is a strange figure for a town whose median house was built in 2009. They sit on Broadway, Main, Depot and McCord Street on narrow deep lots laid out on the section grid, and the surviving stock runs from 1880s frame houses through Craftsman bungalows to post war minimal traditional and 1960s ranch infill. There is no historic district here and no homeowners association, so nothing reviews what a homeowner puts in a window. It is also the only pocket in McCordsville with mature canopy over the glass. One block can hold three separate window vintages, which is why a whole house quote here can't be built from one repeated measure. McCord Square is the only genuinely urban address in a town otherwise built entirely of detached subdivisions. The Town Council approved it in 2021, construction began in 2022, and the town itself is the master developer behind a $4 million infrastructure bond rather than a private developer. Two buildings, The Jackson and The Lucas, hold 205 one- and two bedroom apartments at roughly 111,000 square feet each. Around them sit a 36,400 square foot NineStar Connect office, a 15,000 square foot IU Health clinic and an 18,000 square foot police headquarters finished in 2024. About $53 million had been spent by the time the Indianapolis Business Journal reported on it, against roughly $250 million more planned. That puts a rental market into a town that is 84.7 percent owner occupied, and the window work here answers to a different customer. View McCord Square window treatment details →
Bay Creek at Geist and Bay Creek East occupy McCordsville's northwest corner, running up to the Hamilton County line with Fishers on the other side of it. The street naming is unlike anything else in Hancock County: W Nautica Blvd, Bayfront Shores, Schooner Cir, Coral Reef Rd, Anchormark Dr, Treasure Pointe. Residents use those names rather than the plat name when they say where they live. The plats sit in the town's 1990s and 2000s ring, the era the ACS records as 342 McCordsville units built 1990 to 1999 and 1,223 built 2000 to 2009. Rear elevations here were designed around a west and northwest view over open water, which produces the hardest light condition anywhere in the town. This is the Hancock County side of Geist: same water, Mt. Vernon schools, Hancock County tax rates. View Bay Creek at Geist and Bay Creek East window treatment details →
One name, two plats. Deer Crossing and Springs at Deer Crossing are recorded separately in the Hancock County subdivision index, which means a resident who says they live in Deer Crossing may be in either vintage, and the two were not built at the same time. The whole street set is deer themed, and that's how people actually navigate it: N Deer Crossing Blvd, W Deer Hill Dr, Fawn Meadow Dr, White Tail Trl, Fawn Way, W Black Tail Way and Eagles Nest Ln. Nobody uses the plat name. It sits in west central McCordsville adjoining the Villages at Brookside street network, and unlike the Geist facing corner it backs onto open ground rather than water, so the rear elevations here were never glazed for a view. View Deer Crossing and Springs at Deer Crossing window treatment details →
Hampton Walk is the only McCordsville community on this list where the houses are still going up. Fischer Homes is building it now, in 2026, with 25 single family floorplans running 1,247 to 4,204 square feet plus a separate four plan townhome collection at The Townes at Hampton Walk at 1,582 to 2,157 square feet, starting at $275,990. Detached houses list from $260,000 to $650,000. That spread is the widest of any single community in town, and it's why no standard quote applies: the small plan carries 8 to 12 openings and the large one 26 to 34. Nearly every house here arrives with bare glass, because the builder supplies the openings uncovered. The openings are factory square and the drywall returns are deep, which makes this the easiest measuring environment in McCordsville and the largest single order most owners here will ever place. View Hampton Walk and The Townes at Hampton Walk window treatment details →
Highland Springs sits in the north half of McCordsville, inside the Geist influenced quadrant but without any water frontage of its own. That's the useful distinction for window work: it has the address without the west facing water glass, so the reflected late afternoon light that doubles on the lots facing the reservoir never reaches here. The plat carries its own north and south split in the street naming, Highland Springs Drive and Highland Springs Drive North, plus Highland Lane, and residents use that to tell the sections apart. Hancock County publishes no queryable parcel service, so the build years, the home count and the lot sizes aren't on the public record for this section. Expect 16 to 24 openings, drywall returns with no applied trim, and a squareness check that can come back differently in the two sections. View Highland Springs window treatment details →
Geist Woods Estates sits in the north west quadrant of McCordsville, alongside Westbrooke at Geist and Geist Ridge, on the Hancock County side of the reservoir. Estates naming in Hancock County usually signals wider frontages and more custom elevations than the production plats around it, and that shows up at the window as a bigger schedule: expect 20 to 30 openings against 16 to 24 in the standard two story stock. There's a name trap here worth stating plainly. Geist Woods Drive is a Lawrence street in Marion County, taxed as Lawrence Civil City, with eleven parcels on it. Geist Woods Estates is a McCordsville plat in Hancock County. Same words, different county. The schools and the tax rate differ too, and confusing the two puts a measure at the wrong address. View Geist Woods Estates window treatment details →
Stone Grove and Golden Grove sit on the east side of McCordsville toward Mt. Comfort Road and SR 234, which is the farm edge of the town rather than the Geist edge. The layout tells you that immediately: section roads on the survey grid, N 400 W and N 500 W and W 900 N, rather than the curvilinear collectors running through Brookside and Deer Crossing. Ricks Drive splits three ways here, East, West and South, an older naming convention than the rest of the town's plats use. The window consequence is exposure. Lots back onto open agricultural ground, so rear elevations take a long, unshaded, low angle sun with no neighboring house to interrupt it, year round. That's a glare problem rather than a privacy problem, and it wants a different answer from the one a subdivision interior lot gets. View Stone Grove and Golden Grove window treatment details →
Villas at Timberstone and Timberstone form one of the very few single story dominant communities in a town where two story production housing is the overwhelming norm. That single fact rewrites the whole window schedule. No stair window, no upper hall openings, no two story foyer glass, and a total of 10 to 16 openings against 18 to 28 for McCordsville's dominant 2,200 to 3,200 square foot two story plan. Everything is reachable from the floor, which changes the argument for motorization completely. There's also a naming caution: a separate Timberstone appears in the Fortville subdivision index, so the name spans two towns' address books, and confirming which one you're in matters here more than anywhere else in McCordsville.
